    Famous empty bottles

They're claiming that wooden crates for high-end wines will sell for $50-$250 at auction. Premier Cru used to just pile them up in the parking lot, free for the taking. I think I've mentioned that some of my generic homemade Cali Rhone blends sit in my basement in Chavie crates.

    Premier Cru Bankruptcy

Fox pled guilty to fraud this week. This article says a lot about the man. http://www.berkeleyside.com/2016/08/11/embattled-berkeley-wine-store-owner-spe nt-almost-900k-on-women-i-met-online/

    NWR: T C Boyle

I followed him for many years, beginning with the first book of short stories, but after Drop City I felt that his dark humor/irony was getting monotonous and predictable, so I haven't read subsequent novels. The NYer story was ok.

Hey all you writer and academic types, I wrote a book too!!!

The winery at Nalle Vineyards in Dry Creek is in an old quonset hut covered with a thick layer of dirt holding a green roof. They don't need heating or cooling, just lighting and equipment power. I don't know if they've installed solar panels, but they'd surely be ZNE if the have or will...

Hey all you writer and academic types, I wrote a book too!!!

Nice. Amazon doesn't show the table of contents, so I can't check whether my local favorite ZNE building is included. It's the West Branch of the Berkeley Public Library. http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Berkeley-library-branch-a-zero-net-energy-5100368.php The old building was dark and...

What are you binge-watching this (or last) holiday weekend?

It's excellent, at least as good as the film. I had to miss the second season because of DVR scheduling conflicts, but the first one, with Billy Bob Thorton, was great.

    heat exposure question

A flaw in the corker one year put those lines in every bottle--over 150 of them--of my home wine. The lines appeared very shortly after I laid the bottles on their sides. I got another corker and re-corked them all.

    Napa Earthquake 8/24/2014

Didn't feel much here in Berkeley (only 15 miles away), but these guys saw some serious damage:

    Beware the pine nut.

I love pine nuts. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving one year I got some to use in the dressing, and sampled a few. The next morning the syndrome set in, couldn't taste anything except that metallic bitterness, and I was cooking most of the holiday dishes. I couldn't even tell whether...

De-lurking to mention that yes, there can be differences between the nostrils, documented here: http://www.academicwino.com/2012/09/olfactory-perception-wine-experts-novices.html/ Ernie in Berkeley

    To Lay Me Down

Sometime, pop in a late '70s show of your choice and pop open a 2006 Patricia Green Cellars "Four Winds" vineyard pinot. Yes, the vineyard is named after the line in Franklin's Tower. The pairing is exquisite.

    Jeebus in SF Monday, 12/8

I'm afraid I have to relinquish my coveted waiting-list position. My freelance income is tanking along with the rest of the economy, and I'll be drinking Grocery Outlet overruns and pruno for a while.
