    98 E Guigal Hermitage

Guigal's CR is a disaster zone these days, alas

    Dard and ribo's hermitage 09

Drank this last night with Doug Wregg of Les Caves. It was very impressive - pure, linear fruit. Supple and primary - needs time to develop some edges. Last night it was just too easy to drink. Lush, even.

I'm drinking natural wine out of my Nomblot syrah glass as we speak

    Bastardo/Trousseau

So is Bastardo the same as Brunal? Had an interesting Brunal in Arribes a while back.

    Bastardo/Trousseau

I've heard these are the same variety. Is that true? If so, makes sense. Love the Conceito Bastardo 2007 and 2009; slightly less keen on the austere 2008. I love pale-coloured red wines.

    Visiting Portugal - anybody been?

For a first time visit? Douro has to be on the list - Niepoort, Vale Meao, Vale D Maria, Q de la Rosa, Infantado good to start with, but there are just so, so many good producers there now it's almost impossible to single half a dozen out. I'd also recommend visiting the Dao - Alvaro Castro is...

    Love that Clark Smith

I like Clark. He's an interesting person. I don't agree with everything he says, but I like his sense of humour.

    A surprise

As I mentioned in another post I've just been in the Hunter, and also had extensive discussions at the Landmark Australia tutorial - the conclusion? Semillon in the Hunter reaches physiological ripeness early and is usually picked with low potential alcohol and high natural acidity...

    Hunter Semillon

Vat 1 is the most expensive; Tyrrells also do some single vineyard wines that are a bit cheaper and just as good. Brokenwoods is less expensive and ages very well. And I had a vertical of a cheap commercial Semillon (McGuigan Bin 9000) which is A$11 a bottle and ages very well indeed - we went...

    Hunter Semillon

Just visited the Hunter briefly and tried a bunch of Semillons. These are interesting, low in alcohol, high in acidity, and they age really well. And they're cheap. And they only acidify a bit. Sometimes they don't have to.

Eric Texier in the BA lounge

Surprised - and delighted - to find Eric Texier's Crozes-Hermitage 2007 here in the BA lounge at Heathrow terminal 4. It's an elegant, slightly sappy, well mannered Crozes with lovely texture. Yum.

    Matusalem

No - I didn't justify it thus. I was invited and then told that the theme was luxury oenotourism, but my focus on the write-up has been on the properties and wines, which I think is more interesting.

I think you're being a bit mean, Joe. In fact, you are being a lot mean. You're like the school bully who happens to be four inches taller and twenty pounds heavier than the rest and suddenly decides to pick on one of the little kids. Nice work. I always think the best of others, so I assume...

But Joe don't you find it amusing that I'm just a dude who was trolling on Garr's board a few years back who now makes his living from doing essentially what I was doing then - writing about wine on the internet (as well as some magazines, a newspaper and some books). I call wines as I see...

I love private jets. And helicopters. Flying scheduled is so wearisome.
