    Montreal?

It hurts to hear that. I had a superb meal there a couple of years back. I enjoyed Candide quite a bit on a recent visit. And the former sous-chef of Racines NY, Emily Campeau, is running the wines over there. A little further "south" is Bar Loïc, which offers a wide selection of disorderly...

    Baden wine touring

Very nice report! I have been to visit the Hegers, and I thought they were making some good wines. They especially seemed to excel in cooler vintages like 2014, where producers elsewhere in Germany were struggling. If you have the time while in Baden, it's well worth heading to the...

    Rebholz Im Sonnenschein

That was an excellent bottle, and it changed my perspective on Rebholz. Hard to make a list of the top wineries in Germany without including them. Gunter Seeger is a friend of Hans Rebholz, and his new restaurant has some older vintages (including 2007 and 2008 Ganz Horn as of my visit last month).

    2015 Falkensteins

I had a great visit with these guys and Lars Carlberg last month. The 2015s are lovely, with fully ripe flavors (although not over-done at all), and excellent acidity that balances everything out. Interestingly, 2015 is the first time in many years that the Falkensteins made a non-trocken kabinett.

    Littorai

A couple of years ago, I bought a stash of older Littorai Pinot Noir, going back to 1993 (Ted's first vintage in California). Most of the 1993s were pristine and had unfolded in a very wonderful direction. The wines have edged up in price but I'd certainly rather have them than some of the...

Burgunder | Lowlife | Erykah Badu

Went to Lowlife tonight. I can confirm the reports of good food and wine. The pace was a bit slow, but I assume they are still working the kinks out and coming in for a late dinner on their third Saturday isn't a fair way to judge. Prices are surprisingly reasonable, but you might sit next to...

    The New Status Symbol

For the oligarch in your life: a nice bottle of 2011 Houillon. Judging by the white wax it's the Chardonnay. http://nymag.com/thecut/2015/09/status-survey-115-things-to-have-now/slideshow/28/ A helpful tidbit: "Instagramming it shows you’re in the cool kids’ club.”

Another good baguette source in NYC

Some French colleagues brought pain au chocolat from there (for Bastille Day) and it was spectacular. Shame about the hours, however.

    NYC - Japanese Food

I went there once for dinner and I thought the quality was very high. Unfortunately they have relatively limited hours and a weak beverage program.

    NYC - Japanese Food

Kurumazushi does lunch. The pricing may seem absurd, but I think it's some of the best sushi you can get outside of Japan. The rice is special there-- cooked al-dente and used in moderation to complement the fish. Aside from that, most of the usual suspects are shut at lunch and late-night. The...
