    mushroom question

Novacaesariensis I have a New Jersey copper from 1786, before we had a Federal Government. I show it to my class, magnified 10 feet tall on the screen, and I ask them what country they think it is from. It has a plough, a horse head, the date, and "Nova Caesarea" written plainly. Very rarely...

    mushroom question

By Sharon's Law, wouldn't chanterelles be forbidden? They are quite yellow and quite gilly. Or are they the exception that proves the rule? It's been wet here -- I suppose I have better things to eat than mushrooms that my neighbor's pets have peed on.

    mushroom question

Yes, pretty slimy and they left brown powder on my fingers. Not worth risking my life for an omelet I suppose? BTW if anyone shops at Costco, look for the Chanterelles. A big one pound tray for $9.99 Pretty tasty. Thanks Joe. F

    mushroom question

I know some high powered mushroom guys are on here. Today, in someone's front yard, I picked these guys. At first I was thinking "boletus" because of the lack of distinct fins. But I think the Cepe looks more like a paper with many pinhole punctures. Any idea what this might be? F

    Tender Bar, Ginza

Not to be outdone by Japanese noodle-making is the Japanese fanaticism for quality cocktails. To better experience the phenomenon, Tony visits Bar IshinoHana, world-famous for its exquisitely-crafted cocktails. According to Tony, the bartender spends an "agonizingly" long time making Tony's...

    Tender Bar, Ginza

A month or 2 ago I had friends visiting from Belgium and DC. I had read a piece that said "don't bother going to the top of the Empire State Building -- take them to the Rainbow Room for a drink!" That convinced me and we made a plan to meet at Rockefeller Center. Unfortunately when I called...

    RIP Les Paul

OK, as I was thinking about all this, a scene from a movie went through my head and I am having trouble placing it. And the Googling seems to be too difficult. Old Woody Allen movie (Manhattan, Annie Hall, something else?). There is this guy at a party boring everyone by going on at length...

    RIP Les Paul

I'll admit this whole proposition is pretty shaky. It's hard for me to imagine life without Jimi Hendrix, and it's hard for me to imagine Jimi Hendrix without Les Paul. At any rate -- I think Chet Atkins extended the mechanical side of guitar music to a somewhat unhealthy extent. He had an...

    RIP Les Paul

I grew up listening to Les Paul, and of course to Chet Atkins as well. I know "nil nisi bonum" but I just have an idea I feel a need to express and I thought, why not put it here? There are lots of contrarian views expressed on this board all the time. The briefest way I can put it is that...

    NTR: Garlic scapes?

On the other hand, I bet it has been a LONG time since Kay has seen any vampires.

    NTR: Garlic scapes?

Garlic scapes, or something very much like them (if only I could read Korean) are a big ingredient in Asian cooking. You put them in with pork and shrimps etc. to make your own pot stickers. I'm sure there are hundreds or thousands of uses if you "go Asian" I found this Garlic Scape Recipes F

NWR: A new use for cell phones???

My students seem to use them in lieu of wristwatches. I had not thought of taking pictures of my nipples. When I do, I will be sure to upload them here. I wish I could capture my cardiac arrhythmias on a cell phone. That would save a lot of dough spent on various aspects of cardiology...
