My Xmas Eve tipple: Huet 1996 Vouvray Moelleux "Le Mont" "1ere Trie" - just glorious... honey and apricots and tangy acidity, finish lasts forever, bouquet not as forward but same aromas

What did you have?

On Christmas Eve we had 2019 JJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett. Today we had 2016 Boxler Edelzwicker and 1990 Chateau Palmer with dinner. Next up is Vollenweider's 2019 Wolfer Goldgrube Auslese but we aren't to that stage of the evening just yet.

Christmas Eve we had the Pecchenino San Guiseppe Barolo '07 that was drinking beautifully during what apparently is its prime drinking window.

Paired exceedingly well with black truffles and pasta, then pear/Manchego cheese/salad, and then pecan pie with (lactose-free) yogurt.

The Pecchenino then also worked perfectly well with Christmas Day lunch -- roast duck leg, squash/Brussel sprouts salad, and sauteed mushrooms.

I've got one bottle of 1996 Clos du Bourg Moelleux 1ère Trie and sounds like it should be ready.

Was that before, during or after dinner? Or all of the above? If during dinner, what did you eat?

No wine last night, but today (the 25th) was 2016 Prudhon St. Aubin La Chatenière, lovely as always. I was particularly pleased that it matched well with the main dish of shrimp covered in lime, fennel fronds and some gorgeously-fresh sansho (I feared the sansho might be too strong, but I guess I successfully applied the perfect amount).

Tomorrow onto red Burgundy.

I let the dozen oysters stand on their own then served the wine with crab cakes and potato chips, and alone afterward.

2011 Chidaine Choisilles 14%, classy but coy, followed by 2011 Cappellano Barolo Rupestris 15%, where a hint of heat and iota of oak did not interfere with the overall deliciousness. 29% divided by four came to 7.25% per capita, just about my limit these days.

We were missing the traditional Chinese and a movie out on Christmas, so I opened 1996 Broadbent Madeira Colheita to ease the disappointment. This is the Tinta Negra that Seth wrangled me into buying. Thank you, Seth. I used a Riedel Vinum Port glass.

Somewhat subdued maple syrup, mocha, bake shop spice, old wood barn aromatics. More intense in the mouth adding a hint of lemon-leaning citrus peel on the finish. A nice Madeira at a good price for vintage Madeira these days.

Of course, there’s more left in the bottle to give it some air and close out 2020.

i've got a bottle of 1996 clos du bourg moelleux 1ère trie that i bought at domaine huet in april of 1996.

looks like sometime in the next 20 years or so i should open it.

Continuing the festive holiday weekend, last night was a gorgeous bottle of 2005 Simon Bize Savigny Aux Vergelesses. Maybe those of you with glacial cellars will wait longer. But this is one of the bottles I've owned the longest and it's made two interstate moves with me. Not sure if that advanced it, but it was in a perfect zone last night, for my tastes.

Waves and layers of that rich 2005 fruit, but the tannins and the structure are nicely resolved and harmonious. A lovely drink of rich vibrant and mineral Burgundy. I have one more bottle that will get opened in the upcoming months. The promise of aging was fulfilled!

Now will take a break for a few days and soon enough comes the next holiday!

Another beautiful holiday sampling of a wine by a winery I have often mentioned.

Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards Vine Hill Reserve Pinot Noir '12 -- Solid red, no edge fade, generous bouquet, well made, lots of fruit but not in an over-ripe or extracted style, good acid backbone, full body and nice layers, moderate complexity, just a solidly excellent Pinot Noir typical of the historic SCMV style. [A- A] Ken Burnap originally and now Jeff Emery have always done it right.

Paired well with smothered pork chop, brown rice, medley of green beans/mushrooms/green peas, then biscotti with blueberries.
