i liked 96 montrose - unexpectedly elegant for the chateau, i thought, but this was 6-7 years ago

wonder if niellon in 2018 is a perfect storm of producer style and vintage character that's perhaps too much of a good thing, no? :-) Have not had the pleasure.

Pavel, the Montrose '96 had been double decanted well in advance (4 hours?) of pouring; thus, it was a real delight with no reservations. Similarly, the Cailloux CNdP '05. Both held very well in the glass through the whole evening.

Niellon is one of my favorite white wine producers and this Chassagne-Montrachet '18 lived up to his high billing. In a word, it was delicious. I can't imagine how it might qualify as "too much of a good thing". Moreover, it has been offered at a bargain value-point, at least by some purveyors. It is a remarkable value for being such a good Village wine.

The Boulay Sancerre '19 was quite atypical with its oaken and buttery notes.

Cool super-spreader event.

I'm surprised that the wines weren't more muted or lacking in smell or flavor.

Though I had a lovely 2003 Niellon Batard Montrachet (as well as a terrible 2003 Niellon Chevalier Montrachet) last year.

I doubt 2018 will be worse than 2003.

Is that like someone in 1915 saying, “I doubt the Lusitania could be worse than the Titanic”?

Doubt all you want, mon ami.
How about this:
2018s better than 2003s for the first 5 years, but worse after 10 years.
All that tannin has got to be good for something, no?

I had a really nice wine tonight, but I feel guilty reporting on it (let alone providing a tasting note) because my girlfriend and I were sitting less than 6 feet apart.

Quite true... you don't know where that cork has been.

Jay, that's strong...and quite surprising for a Niellon wine. Are you quite certain it wasn't somehow damaged?

[EDITED TO ADD] To the extent they can be considered reliable, the Cellar Tracker reviews are all generally favorable toward this bottling.

Mark, yes, very safe assumption. Otherwise, I can't describe or provide a photo of the dish as per the menu description inasmuch as I had the chef cook my tuna (I don't eat raw). The chef is French...as is his cuisine.
