I was tickeled to see a bottle of 2017 Prieure Saint-Christophe Mondeuse at a local shop, but less so at the price ($85). I've never had anything from the domaine, so decided to bite the bullet.
The first day, it was as though Pfifferling made Mondeuse in the Savoie. Wonderful freshness, with spice, aromatic complexity, and a gentle (but not flabby) palate. I saved some with Coravin, but I'm a little concerned it may drop off because the wine seemed rather delicate.
As I said, I've not had a Grisard wine (but would dearly like to), so I can't say how this new iteration of the domaine compares. It's hard for me to see the wine I drank yesterday lasting 10+ years, but there can be such surprises. I have first-hand accounts of Overnoy Poulsard with decades on it drinking well, so it can happen, even if Overnoy wines are pretty singular.
My initial reaction is that I'm glad I splurged on the bottle, but I probably won't hurry to buy more for the cellar. I can get a few Pfifferling each year in the $40s, and they scratch much the same itch. I'm curious though, if anyone recalls the Grisard wines when young and whether they showed similarly to this bottle.
