Impressions 8-12-21
2014 Jadot, Macon-Villages - inexpensive Chardonnay at seven; some of the fruit has fallen away and the structure is more evident. Diane says good with food but not without - while I don’t go that far, her point is taken. These weren’t meant to go longer.
But I still say that, in its first 3-4 years, it is near impossible to beat this quality at this price for Chardonnay.
1990 Chateau Gloria - at 31, a baby. No sign of age; it is bright, balanced and firm without being angular or heavy. Resolving tannins but still has grip. Lovely fruit yet no real secondary development. Truly enjoyable but will easily last another 30.
N/V Jousset, Maceration de Chenin - no vintage on the label; orange wine made from Chenin Blanc. Served too cold but as it warms this smooths and broadens. The last glass was the best and that was very good, indeed. Why people refrigerate skin-fermented whites is a mystery.
2014 Huet, Vouvray Sec Le Mont - much too young; serviceable white wine until about an hour after opening when it (just) began to open. Hold.
2010 Gonon, St. Joseph VV - easily identifiable blind as northern Rhône, weightless, intense, complex Syrah that has years ahead of it. But excellent now.
2019 Birichino, Cinsault Bechthold Vineyard - one of my favs; light enough for fish, grippy enough for steak and beautiful fruit which tends toward the savory. Drinks well young.
2014 Closel, Savennieres La Jalousie - needs time to open; becomes suave and complex with notable texture and depth.
2012 Pinon, Vouvray Brut non-dose - full mousse, stone/citrus flavors and a hint of oxidation which does not detract. Good stuff.
2018 Lois Michel, Chablis - textbook Chablis, pure and clean. Delicious with shrimp Francese.
2018 Louis Michel, Chablis Sechet - Dionysus’ summer home is in Sechet. One glass of this and the breath steadies, infirmities heal, the mind calms, the heart opens and you realize that all you see is for you. Glorious wine!
2018 Tissot, Trousseau Singulier - this works in many ways - great fruit; not over done but fully ripe - structure and grip in balance - and that special something that is so Jura; could be acidity, maybe energy, probably magic. Real, good, wine.
2018 Pierre Richard, Poulsard Cotes de Jura - speaking of Jura, this translucent, light weight beauty is smooth and pretty and layered and a wine for intimate conversation and kisses. I love it; your mileage may vary.
2018 Vincent, Pinot Noir Ribbon Ridge - sappy, brilliant stuff that has miles to go but is expressive now. For me, great wine is eloquent for many years; showing different aspects perhaps but always generous. There is no doubt that this wine will answer the bell for a couple of decades - and be giving every time.
Vincent is now my favorite domestic Pinot Noir producer.
2010 Dom Perignon, Champagne Brut - weightless, citrus, fine bead, good length. Toward the end of the bottle the flavors became more complex but the weightless character never left. Exactly what I want in fine Champagne, albeit young.
2011 Cowan Cellars, Syrah Bennett Valley - dark, rich, savory and throwing sediment; a decade is only the beginning.
Best, jim
