I decided it was time to post about wine without sticking it on the end of the marathon thread. This is my first of two nights at Noreetuh since I plan to be there again tonight.

2017 Mousse Fils Terre d'Illite Blanc de Noirs: 95% Meunier; opened a day, which apparently did it some good; green apple, mint, and honey and incisive

1999 Vincent Couche Sensation: 50-50 Pinot Noir-Chard; 20 years on the lies; strongly oxidative style that I can appreciate but is not for me

2008 Pascal Doquet Le Mont Aime Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut: lovely layered BdB, lush but balanced. I find 2008 to be very successful Chez Doquet.

2008 Charles Heidsieck Rosé Millésime: needs a lot of air if opening now; really gets going with some Rosé spice and juicy red fruit after an hour; very nice Rosé

2014 Roses de Jeanne (Cédric Bouchard) Côte de Béchalin: 100% Pinot Noir; so tight it needs a decant (we did 1.5 hours in decanter on ice), and then more air (sat in my glass for well over an hour); showing stone fruit on the nose and just fabulous in the mouth and finish as it grows with air; too bad the price has jumped significantly in the last few months in the US

2020 Little Boat Russian River Valley Chardonnay: This was pretty bad. It’s unrecognizable as Chardonnay at 14+% (and showing hot) with heavyish vaguely Alsatian nose and a fairly flat pallet. If you see it, move on.

2005 Pierre Bouree Gevrey in magnum: rustic dark Burgundy that is solid but nothing profound

2019 Brende Cooper’s Reed Cab: almost no varietal character. Ripe and big. No.

2015 La Pialade: that’s the most compelling Grenache from the S. Rhône I’ve had other than Rayas itself in a few years. The essence of pink grapefruit and its pith, almost Pineau d’Aunis like. Bracingly refreshing. How the house managed to make a cool wine in a ripe, warm vintage is a mystery. Fabulous wine.

2018 Piedrasassi Arroyo Grande Valley Rim Rock Vineyard Syrah: some Brett that didn’t bother me; solid varietal Syrah with floral and dark berries fruit. Has tannins that should resolve. Pretty good stuff although it’s hard to know whether these will age as well as some of the Qupe and Ojai wines that play in the same sandbox.

2017 Roilette Marquis de Griffe. Yep, I opened another one. Still gorgeous in youth although now I think it’s a good time to leave it alone. The nose is layered and silky and elegant for a young Fleurie. My five dinner companions also loved it.

I could not have written this note with more precision.
Best, Jim
