Pichon Baron

A preferred bottling from a preferred vintage...

Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron '90 -- Dark color, all the right Claret scents, generous bouquet, balanced acidity/tannins, elegant richness with backbone, solid core of fruit, plenty of staying power in the glass, a wine sure to please presently and for a long time ahead, comparable to the Haut Brion '90 and maybe close to the excellence of the Haut Brion '89. [E - O]

Worked ideally with sauteed liver and sauteed peppers/haricots vert/onions. Then chocolate chip cookie and small chocolate cookie.

I recall having this wine in its youth, Pete. At that time, it was thick, almost coffee-like with a very dense structure. I’m glad to hear that it has evolved so well.

Mark, I'm trying to think what might have happened to the bottle you describe. Strange. You were very unlucky.

no, that's how the wine was on release, consistently - at least relative to other 1990s at similar level; not sure I had ever tasted it on its own

Wonderful Valentines Day dinner wine...

Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron '97 -- Dark red, classic bouquet, very soft profile for easy drinking, all the elements still on hand if rather evolved, no edges whatsoever, still time left but drinking sooner rather than later would be wise. [E]

Worked excellently with broiled veal chop, sweet potato fries, polenta/peas, and snow peas.

Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron '90 Crumbly cork, still dark red, restrained Claret bouquet that's most appealing, quite smooth, full and flavorful on palate, nice depth and complexity, elegant profile, probably fully mature (possibly due to questionable cork), excellent length, should hold fine in a cool cellar, seriously fine and remains one of my favorite Bordeaux. [E -O]

Ideal with grilled steak, roasted sweet potatoes, and mixed green/beans salad.
