TN: Salt + Ginger again (Dec 3, 2023)

Jeff Grossman

Jeff Grossman
attendees: Jay + Arnold, Paul + Sandy, Scott, Jeff

We're back here, at one of Jay's favored places, the instant it opens. The staff already know us so they tolerate us well.

Alas, the chef was not tolerating something yesterday so no Beggar's Chicken was prepared. The special plate tonight is fish three ways: one fillet braised, one fillet done in 'salt and pepper' style, and the bones made into broth.

Conversation at the table is lively and focuses on work, remote and otherwise, and also the latest organ recitals....

And we are very impressed with Bacchus' treatment of us on this drizzly evening:

Pol Roger 2012 Champagne Brut - 60-40 pinot-chard; light, bright, and juicy; white peach and white flowers; pleasant and good with food but not really distinctive

Dom. Labet 2014 Trousseau "Le Pre du Bief" - $11 at the domaine; wow wine, pale cloudy red, stones, river water, "Ethereal" -Jay

Rollin 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er "Les Vergelesses" - very assertive, it can't be oaky (this is Rollin!) but it sure rings that bell, "Cranberry" -Jay; it's more harmonious after an hour, but anyway don't hurt yourself and leave this alone for a few more years

Lamarche 2008 Vosne-Romanee "La Croix Rameau" - 12%, yum and zing, elegant, delicate red fruits in a tangy package

Salvioni 2015 Brunello di Montalcino "La Cerbaiola" - 15% but hides it well, fresh and fruity, suave, brown earth, sangiovese goodness, OMG bottle

Aleofane (Natacha Chave) 2020 Crozes-Hermitage - primary, lots of black fruit and a whiff of earth, young but classic

J.J. Prum 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese - 7%, AP 2 576 511 17 22, vivacious youngster, incredibly pure and pretty bouquet, and not so sulfury as in past times

Ten. di Castellaro 2021 "Bianco Pomice" - malvasia delle lipari 60% / carricante 40%, crisp and floral (of course!), excellent Sicilian white, yum

An enjoyable evening all around!
