He didn't come out well in the later years of the band bio One Way Out, but his solos have aged like fine wine.

He didn't. I saw them at the Fillmore Auditorium in 1996. Dickey wasn't on stage with them that night. IIRC, he was so drunk that Gregg Allman wouldn't let him play. I haven't read the book so if it's mentioned, the details might be different.

I didn't see them with Duane, but did many times after the 1989 comeback, both with Dickey and Derek Trucks after Dickey was fired.

I don't recall that specific incident in the book, but that captures the gist of it. One of the band members characterized him as great sober, a mean drunk. Live, I think the Warren Haynes era was great; but it seems like Warren Haynes can play anything.
