Ch d'Issan

Chateau d'Issan '00 -- Solid dark, fragrant, lots of dark berries, maybe some herbs, smooth and largely resolved, dark fruits, no edginess, good staying power, silky and elegant, at its peak. [E]

Worked well with grilled pork chops, roasted cauliflower, and sauteed Swiss chard.

Ditto...with Japanese chicken curry.

Thanks, Pavel.

According to 67 Pall Mall, a bit of history...

In 1152, Ch“teau d’Issan (or Lamothe Cantenac as it was known at the time) was served at the royal wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Henry II. In the 1400s, the vineyard was known as Teobon, until finally it became named for its 17th century owner, a knight called d’Essenualt, the phonetic contraction of which is “d’Issan”.

In 1945 the Ch“teau was bought by the Cruse family, who remain its owners to this day.
