TN: MWC Walkaround (Nov. 15, 2023)

Jeff Grossman
Another evening members-only event hosted by MWC, your friendly neighborhood wine storage. (Yes, yes, latitude and longitude make a difference but they're friendly, anyway.)

It's a walkaround event so notes are brief.

Table 1 - Sarah
Marguet Pere et Fils 2018 Champagne Brut Rose GC - nice nose but a weirdly assertive palate of overripe cherries, maybe useful with food?, meh otherwise
Remi Leroy 2019 Champagne Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs - chalky, crisp but not sharp as it's buffered by the rs, happy to drink this

Table 2 - Marc
Thierry Germain 2020 Saumur Blanc "l'Echelier" - nice, resinous, leather, more interesting than yummy but even so
Clos Rougeard 2012 Saumur-Champigny - magnum, quite beautiful (and not available, just here to enjoy it)
Dom. Filliatreau 2005 Saumur-Champigny VV - funky nose but a pretty palate, textured, hints of orange and strawberry

Table 3 - Matt
Bouzereau-Gruere et Filles 2021 Meursault "Les Tillets" - yah, it's chardonnay too rich for its own good, resinous, lactic
Lignier-Michelot 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis "En La Rue de Vergy" - fragrant and forward, venison and earth, wow nose and a taut palate, excellent
Philippe Jouan 2016 Chambolle-Musigny - pretty enough, typique enough, good enough

Table 4 - Julie
Salicutti 2020 Rosso di Montalcino - perfumey, red fruit basket, mid-to-heavy weight
Tenuta de Carleone 2020 Toscana IGT "Uno" - this is a big chianti, red fruit all the way, glyceral, in a few years this should be glorious (and it's yum now)

Table 5 - CIP
Le Piane 2018 Boca - beautifully transparent, fruity but also lots of tannins (which is incongruous)
G. Rinaldi 2018 Barolo "Tre Tine" - good depth, already showing some tar, grippy, in the raspberry-cranberry flavor camp (little fruits, in any case), pretty darned perfect
Flavio Roddolo 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon "Bricco Appiani" - beautifully made and finally easing-up a bit, there's an intriguing hint of brett in the nose but too much of it on the palate
Maria Ernesta Berucci 2019 Cesanese del Piglio "Mola de Piedi Cru" - assertive, pretty nose, made in amphora so the palate is overlaid with the taste of clay

Table 6 - Charles
Santa Duc 2020 Gigondas "Les Hautes Garrigues" - grenache/mourvedre split, pleasant enough cherry candy but way too high octane (14.5% that tastes like 15.5%)
Monier-Perreol 2021 Saint-Joseph "Chatelet" - spicy, crisp, peppery, light-to-mid weight

Table 7 - Jonathan
Stein 2022 Riesling Palmberg Kabinett Trocken - 09 23, full and rich and dry and herbal, good balance of weight and tangy, fresh but a little short on the finish
Benanti 2020 Etna Bianco Superiore "Contrada Rinazzo" - good zing but undistinguished otherwise
Clos Cibonne 2021 Tibouren Rose "Cuve Speciale des Vignettes" - palest rose I have ever seen, beautiful floral nose, weirdly flat/tactile palate, tastes a bit of flor?
Foillard 2016 Morgon "Corcelette" - powerful, tangy, warm and ripe fruit, luscious but kinda anonymous
Antoniotti 2017 Bramaterra - nebbiolo poured over apricots, grippy, bit of menthol, rather more elegant than tannic
Monte Dall'Ora 2019 Valpolicalle Classico Superiore "Camporenzo" - half a dozen grapes in the cepage, bright, stylish, drink this one on its freshness

Customer Brings
Gilles 2020 Cornas - good, tangy, too young to really evaluate
Tschida 2017 "Hokus Pokus" - magnum, 12%, franc like, a touch of brett, very drinkable
Blackbird 2005 "Paramour" - magnum, appallingly overwrought bottle with meh wine inside
Puffeney NV Arbois "Cuvee Sacha" - L.SCH003, seriously rancio, long finish of cereal and chicken soup (that reads badly but this was really excellent)

I always enjoy these events. Thank you, MWC.

in the past year i had two bottles of 2005 filliatreau vv, from different sources and perfectly stored (although i can't guarantee that they weren't purchased at the same place), and both were maderized. really a shame as I loved the wine on release. i figured it couldn't be a coincidence; what gives? was this really fresh?
