So, if you — like me — find yourself with 5 hours to kill in Taipei Taiyuan airport while awaiting your flight to O’Hare (a common problem among you, I know) you could do worse than planting yourself in one of EVA’s three VIP lounges for some downtime and a timely repast. In my case this meant an assortment of Taiwanese dishes (highly recommended: the Taiwanese hamburger {their name} which consisted of a steamed bao-like blin to which one adds braised pork, ground peanut, pickled Chinese cabbage and cilantro). Of course, no meal is complete without a vinous accompaniment, which in this case consisted of either the 2021 White Rabbit Riesling, an offering from the Ress family in the Rheingau (While not likely to be mistaken for Schloss Johannisberg, it offered decent varietal character (a touch of petrol and white peach) in an off-dry package with decent acidity an 9.5 % ABV) or the 2021 Jean Biecher Gewurtztraminer d’Alsace, also varietally correct which in this case means honeyed lychee (been getting a few of those as referents during my 5 days in China) flavors in a heavy, off-dry package weighing in at 13.5% ABV with barely sufficient acidity.
