I often think of Weiss Burgunder as broad and neutral, leaning towards a limp floral puddle in the mouth, and rather boring. Some of the more ambitious versions turn that on its head with creamy depth and riper fruit flavors, which can be good. But here we have two of the newer winemakers working in a more linear and energetic style, which is also much appreciated.

I very much enjoyed the vigor of the 2021 Saalwächter Weisser Burgunder. Intense fruit but with crisp 2021 structure and so so lively in the mouth. A very nice rendition of a straightforward wine that was perfect for dinner.

Things were a bit more complicated with the 2018 Wasenhaus Möhlin Weissburgunder, which had pungent 2018 fruit (and maybe some wood influences?) but then the linear elegant structure of Wasenhaus. It didn't all come together as a package for me, but it was still an interesting interpretation. And it was the first time my friend had tasted Wasenhaus, which he found very impressive. So that was nice for him!

in that idiom, look out a bottle of teh moritz kissinger weissburgunder 2022 -- while remaining unmistakably weissburgunder, it shows a mixture of simple purity and subtle funky complexity that i normally associate with the jura, and is a delicious and very useful bottle at teh trough.

Nice to hear that. I've seen the Kissinger wines around. So many wines, so little time...

Ha! Yes, one can always question the purchasing decisions... In this case, the Wasenhaus Weissburgunder was actually the third wine we tried to order, after the bar spent over 30 minutes searching and failing to find our first two selections! (Apparently they have multiple cellars and not all the wines are kept onsite. I guess a practical reality, but not very conducive to opening bottles at a bar...)

That said, I do like the Wasenhaus Spätburgunders and find the German prices 'fair', if not a bargain. I have never bought them in the US where I find the prices ludicrous.
 
am still chuckling over "limp floral puddle." it sums up a so many of my misgivings about so much wb.

in that light, tonight's bottle of 2020 tiny winery big bamm weissburgunder from dhron in teh mosel evinced mixed feelings of delight and dismay. delight because although this is a natural, low sulfur expression of weissburgunder, it is remarkably clean, and shows some nice, dense, chardonnayesque beige fruit on the palate. it also has a strong, near steely core of acidity in the finish (which is another area of weakness i find in wb).

the dismay comes from reflecting on how many great wines i've now had from this now-former-winery, especially in relation to what is actually out there. nuff said.

The weakness that it usually lacks that acidity I assume?
