2000 Wendouree Shiraz-Mataro

Salil Benegal

Salil Benegal
Brought this to a small dinner last week. Carried down on the train, opened at the restaurant (in hindsight, should have probably opened earlier in the day as it both showed very young and had quite a lot of sediment). Savoury, wild, herbaceous intense rosemary, eucalyptus, and minty scents lead into a palate full of youthful dark fruited flavours over a base of earth and iron. There’s a sense of restraint and a wild, briary quality to the fruit, lots of structure beneath with bright acids and plenty of grainy tannin on the back end. Shame these wines are so hard to come by, but truly special, singular experiences.

It was a brilliant bottle, thanks for bringing it! Neil was surprised I chose it over the 98 Jamet you offered, but you only get so many chances at these wines.
