2008 Boillots and 2023 Lapierres

Have been debating whether to keep holding or open these 08 Boillots, so decided to check in. The 2008 Louis Boillot Gevrey Chambertin Champonnet started off rusty sharp and angular and really benefited from some time in a decanter. Eventually, the firm crisp midweight fruit became more prominent, and got nicer and nicer. Always very structured and not the most charm, but it had its moments. Still not sure when to open the rest of these bottles! The 2008 Louis Boillot Volnay Les Brouillards was a much worse bottle. Tart sour and fierce, never really gained a suggestion of charm.

So I opened 2023 Lapierre Morgon S as a backup and that brought easy pleasure. Rollicking ripe fruit that was not shy, but still elegant, succulent, silky and always preserved some clarity and fresh structure. So easy to like and drink. I haven’t drunk much Lapierre in recent years, but this renewed my respect. It also had me intrigued for the 2023 Lapierre Morgon N. Here I was hoping for something “more”. Which I did not get. The flavor profile was darker, less succulent, lacier and angular, less body. Over time, it gets very elegant and delicate, and is always a very nice wine. It lacked the lip-smacking succulence of the S, which is my preferred bottling right now. But I can’t predict the future.

Were the Boillots from the place near Bastille? I think I've mentioned to you before that I've had some not very good experiences with aged wine from there, and Boillots, in particular.

Yes, you have mentioned that. And now you have me worried again, because my most prized Boillots are older vintages of Cherbaudes that I bought from them and never saw in the US!

But most of my Boillot, including the 08s, was bought in the US, through Cave Taureau/Rue Cler/Rare Wine. I don't think it's a storage issue, the 08 vintage chez Boillot has always been finicky, at least in my experience.
