TN: Grosjean Valee D'Aosta Gamay

2006 Grosjean Gamay (Vallee DAosta, Italy)
This bottle rocked. Ruby/red in color, mostly clear and bright. What an enticing nose. Earthy, slight barnyard, cherries, cranberries and complex. Full bodied. Great juicy texture. On the palate, this is so easy to drink, yet so intriguing. Layers of cranberries and raspberries and earth. Long finish. Held up over two nights. For $20, this was intellectually stimulating and fun to drink. I am a Beaujolais fan, and this was as good as most of them. This tiny corner of northwest Italy really deserves more attention from those looking for honest, traditional wines.

I found this a bit chewy when I had it, but otherwise very good and I seconf the recommendation. Perhaps I was expecting something a touch lighter.

Thirding this wine - but around the Pacific NW they run 25 to 30 retail and in the 40's at a restaurant. Still a good and interesting wine, I just wish the QPR was better. *Shakes fist at dollar* Also, it is a touch fuller than Beaujolais, but that just makes me like it more. Gamay is a transparent grape, much like pinot, and it's interesting to try examples from far flung zones and different winemakers.

They all seem to be $25-30 here in Boston. Maybe I'm shopping at the wrong stores.

There's another link in the chain up here- Ruby needs their cut. That's standard retail markup with perhaps a buck or two for handsold rarity.

I bought mine on vacation in L.A. of all places. I looked on winesearcher and they seem to be less. As far as I know, they are not available at all in Ohio.

They've already gotten more than enough of my cuttings via Trimbach. Or not, these days, because $42.99 vs. $27.99 for the CFE a few years back was the last straw.

I drank a bottle of the Gamay 2006 recently, and I didn't find it so complex. But I remember the finish was long. Of course the complexity may have come out if we hadn't put it down in under an hour. Very enjoyable. Paid $19 in VA.

Oh believe me, I wasn't implying that it was a reasonable cut- perhaps "pound of flesh" would have been better.
