A weightier sptlese than I expected from this maker and vineyard, it tastes rather more like one of his Bernkastel bottlings (8% ABV is likely just one of the many statistics which support this impression; I am guessing the dry extract numbers are high as well). But my - what a wine. Popped after moving my wines to a new fridge (okay, a 2nd fridge as I'd maxed out my first), this was just the tonic - sulfurous, closed, all potential but clearly well-balanced - hence justifying my decision to go very, very long on the 2007s from him. Finishes slightly bitter but I'm not worried.

Am cracking open the '97 Auslesen now from him - they're drinking well and will continue to do so for quite some time to come.

As opposed to other vintages?

After having tasted the 2007 range I can agree that it is a lovely vintage for the Prums, but not that it is any better than other fine vintages of the recent past. Stylistically it is certainly nothing like its predecessor, but it does bear some relation to '01 and maybe '05.

As for the alcohol, 8.0% is not at all uncommon in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese. Just a quick check showed that the '95, '96, '99, and of course '06 achieved or exceeded this threshold (and those were just the bottles that were handy in the cellar - I didn't look at '01-'05). 2007 is a palate-rich vintage, and will likely be both long-lived and appealing in its mature stage, but it's no better than what has gone before (similar to my thoughts regarding Donnhoff).
