Alesia, Boxler, Heredia, Roagna, Wirsching

From memory as I didn't take notes. Maybe Brad or Christine can fill in the missing blanks.

1992 Hans Wirsching Franconia Julius-Echter-Berg Riesling Spatlese Trocken
Very pretty floral nose, good though not terribly complex on the palate.

2001 Boxler Sommerberg Riesling
Closed for business. Revisit in 4 or 5 years.

2003 Alesia Syrah "Sonoma County"
I remember sitting in EMP for the very first Rhys/Alesia offline and commenting that this seemed like a good Syrah that just needed some time to come together. Well, I'm happy to report that it's come together. Bright red berry fruit with a hint of meat, good acidity, jubilant wine that's a pleasure to drink. No hurry but no need to worry about opening one now either.

1993 Roagna Barbaresco
Pleasant moderately complex Barbaresco. Nothing to write home about but I'd certainly be happy to buy this again at the same closeout pricing. Not in the same league as the beautiful '98.

1981 Lopez de Heredia 'Bosconia' GR
The fabled bottle variation strikes again. This was a so-so example of what is usually a stunning wine.

There was also a Belleviere that was drinking very well but I didn't see the label. Anything else I've forgotten?

Glad the '92 Wirsching did better for you than me. Nice to hear about the Alesia syrah too, since I never really dug their syrahs and still have a few.

I could have sworn you were a big fan of the '93 Roagna a few years ago?

Many, many thanks for the update. I've been itching to try one and only have a couple. Didn't we have one of these last year out by your place that was beautiful, if very young, when David was in town?

I'm sort of glad you set my expectations so low as this was a pleasant surprise. The nose was especially attractive.

I'm a big fan of their 1993 Barolo (which I also picked up during the distributor closeout). And this was a very nice bottle of wine just nothing to jump up and down about.

Do you still have any of the '03 Syrah? It's really much better now than on release. Not great syrah, but certainly very good syrah.

Maybe, or it might have been the 2001 Brand (which Brad reminded me is the one that's much more open now). Were we on Disorder by then? I'll do a search for notes.

tried a search here and on therapy. the albanians must have gotten it.

You forgot the '06 Lapierre Morgon, Jay, which showed beautifully.

That Franken Trocken had the Lyle Fass Selection warning on it, as well as the word Trocken, so, as expected, I hated it.

I thought the Alesia quite nice and perhaps the best match with the peppered duck breast, though the Lapierre was also good. However, I got more of a black fruit profile than red. Had a lovely sweetness to the fruit, but was not jammy or overdone by oak.

Bummer about the Bosconia, but par for the course with Lopez de Heredia, as we all know.

Wasn't much of a fan of the Roagna. I like it better aromatically than on the palate where it was lean and dominated more by earth and leather and was rather hollow and short.

Yeah, the Sommerberg seems to have closed up shop for now. The '01 Boxler Brand, in my experience, has always been friendlier.

Btw, we started with an '05 Bellivire Vieilles Vignes Eparses that someone must've left in my fridge on New Years. Certainly friendlier in '05 than in past vintages and while pleasant, there was an odd dirty note to the minerality that got worse when paired with the cheese.

Interesting that Lapierre's 2006 is doing well now. The 2005 is pretty well dominated by its structure at this point.

Yes the 2006 Lapierre was certainly firing on all cylinders that night. Knew I was forgetting something...
