Biggio Hamina Syrah

2007 Biggio Hamina Syrah Deux Vert Vineyard XX
Yamhill Carlton AVA, Oregon

This is their syrah that was co-fermented with 20% Viognier.

Translucent medium ruby color. The first whiff is floral, maybe honeysuckle, then young grapey syrah fruit, a little fresh turned earth and pepper. Light to medium weight in the mouth, closer to a 2007 Cru Beaujolais than any previous syrah I have tried from the US, at least in weight and texture. Juicy cranberry citrus like acidity, with good length and fine tannins. Spicy black pepper lingers also. 12% alcohol, which is readily believable. No obvious new oak flavors. Closed with a screw cap.

I am very impressed with this effort; a cool climate, food friendly Oregon syrah. Kudos to the folks at Biggio Hamina.

Interesting stuff. Sounds promising. How different is this terroir from the vineyards where Oregon grows the famous pinot noir?

I don't know exactly where the grapes for this wine come from, but there's plenty of Pinot in the Yamhill Carlton AVA. Although perhaps you already knew that.

I definitely didn't know that.

Normally I wouldn't think of growing pinot noir and syrah together, but this sounded like a unique version of syrah.

They grow Melon, Viognier, Syrah, Pinot Noir and even a little bit of Tempranillo on the Deux Vert vineyard. The Syrah vines were planted in 1995 and supposedly are the oldest in Oregon.

Wow. Interesting. How big is this 'vineyard'?

Have you tasted all the wines. Which one do you think is the most successful? Must be a really interesting interpretation of each of these grapes in comparison to what we know from Europe.

From the Yamhill Carlton website, the Deux Vert vineyard is 14.5 acres.
6 for Pinot Noir, 3.75 for Syrah, 3 Viognier, 1.25 Melon, and 0.5 Tempranillo.

It is dry farmed and non tilled vineyard, and they only use bio pesticides, whatever that means.

I think Florida Jim has posted notes on the Pinot Noir and maybe the Melon.
I haven't tasted anything else yet.

I have had two of the single vinyd. pinots, the pinot blanc and the melon.
Briefly, the melon was pleasant, the pinot blanc was better than I first thought and the pinots were translucent and appeared to be well-made.
I will make it a point to try everything they do - I think they are a winery to watch.
Best, Jim

I've started calling my dog Biggio.

Because it's just fun to say.

Biggio Biggio Biggio.

Plus Hamina Hamina Hamina has already been done.

I like putting 'vineyard' in both single and double quotes. "Vineyard," 'vineyard,' "vineyard"!

Do you repeat yourself when under stress?

I'm just so happy that Stump won!

this sounds to me like a different (and welcome) take on the grape compared to the majority of WA st syrahs i've tasted. thanks for the notes.

Goodness, am I the only Westminster Dog Show addict around here?

Stump is the first Sussex Spaniel ever to win Best In Show, and also by a good measure the oldest winner in the 100+ year history of the competition.

"A nearly full crowd at Madison Square Garden cheered loudly when judge Sari Tietjen pointed to the new champion at the Westminster Kennel Club. Perhaps the fans knew Stumps backstory he left the show ring in 2004 and later nearly died from a mysterious medical condition. The vets at Texas A&M saved him.

It was miraculous, Sommer said.

Then again, maybe folks just liked rooting for the old guy. In human years, hes almost 70! [NB: the records state his age as 10 years and change, which would make him over 70 in human years, unless the exchange rate has changed.]

Sommer said Sussex spaniels can live to be 15. Never before had a dog from this breed won the show. The previous oldest winner was an 8-year-old Papillon in 1999.

With floppy ears and a slow gait, the golden-red Stump beat out a sparkling final field. Sommer guided him past a giant schnauzer that was the nations top show dog, a favored Brussels griffon, a Scottish deerhound named Tiger Woods, a standard poodle with 94 best in show wins, a Scottish terrier and a puli."

Lisa was rooting for the puli because she had one as a kid, but appreciated the dark-horse winner in the end. He's got to fill the big pawprints of Uno the beagle, last year's media sensation.
