An AP story financial page of a southern CA newspaper this morning. Since May of last year spam sales have been growing by double-digit percentages. Info released by Nestle SA & Hormel. I guess with the recession if many of us are going to change our diets to reflect lowered incomes I think it is incumbent on Chris our spam expert to help us with our wine choices to accompany this island delicacy. Maybe Chris has a spam cookbook he can recommend to us.
Holy shit, I just glanced at the market figures for today so far! What's cheaper than spam?

the 'fly by night club' is a bar in anchorage alaska that has long been one of the foremost proponents of spam, even to the point that the house band is 'the spamtones' (hormel tried to sue, to no avail), and their bar menu has plenty of lovely spam-based dishes.

here's the url where a guy can purchase their spam cookbook.

they also feature great blues and jazz: i've seen brownie mcghee, memphis slim, ben sidran, and jay mcshann there.

Try this classic brunch salad. It pairs especially well with Heinz cooking sherry.

1 can SPAM Luncheon Meat, cubed -(12 oz)
2/3 c Mayonnaise or salad dressing
1 tb Lime juice
1 t Dry mustard
2 c Seedless grapes
1 c Peapods, cut in half
1/2 c Thinly sliced red onion

In skillet, saute SPAM over high heat 2 minutes,
stirring constantly; set aside. In small bowl, combine
mayonnaise, lime juice, and dry mustard. In large
bowl, combine grapes, SPAM, peapods, and onion. Toss
with mayonnaise mixture. Cover and chill 1 hour.

Good lord!

That looks like something out of my Grandma's small town Minnesota Norwegian Lutheran cookbook. The only thing it's really lacking is green jello, and then you could call it "salad."

Cheers,

Kevin

Ah, nothing like a little cooking with gelatin.

Yum!

Hmmm. I don't know. I think it would require cream of something soup to be true Minnesota Lutheran.

Mmm, pork jello... My Estonian Grandma-in-Law would make this occasionally as Gramps-in-Law was declining in health (hey, get all the calories you can). Pretty good- had baking spices in there for a savory sweet salty fatty thing.

That whole website is super awesome. I haven't visited in ages.

When we cleaned out my Grandma's house, we found jello in such tasty flavors as "tomato" and "vegetable." They had 1 cent coupons on the back.

The site used to be much bigger, but of course much of the content was removed when the book arrived.

If you go here there's plenty of time wastin' to be had.

I've certainly managed to accomplish very little today...
Isn't that just Disorderly conduct for you?

I rather thought it my red badge of courage.
