TN: 1998 Frederic Esmonin Gevrey Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques. Rather cloudy. I am not sure what to make of this producer, or maybe of this vintage. Any thoughts would be welcome. It gets going only with about three hours of air, and is better with four. At first I did not like it, with a slight tomato nuance. At the three hour mark, it is much smoother with light spice and strawberry as it sorts itself out. Though still some drying tannin (wood tannin?) on the end, its nothing to worry about at all as air sorts it out. I like it now, not so much at first, though its curious how much this will improve or not. It is sort of clamped down, and I wonder whether its the vintage or the producer, or both. No hurry here, in any event. $35. A solid 88 points.

Did you buy it on release? I wonder if the wine was heat damaged? -mark

I did not, and thought about that because of the tomato, but that note went away with air.

It doesn't sound right to me for producer or vintage. I've only had the 2000 vintage of this which is rather marvellous in its gentle way.
