Still available at the domaine for 16 euros. What a wine - I was wrong about this wine 5 years ago.

Also, Weiser-Knstler made some really good wines in 2008; maybe not as stunning as their 2007s, but they're getting the hang of the Gaipsfad vineyard.

Keller's range was excellent, including the Scheurebe trocken. I bought half-a-case. The one to watch for is not the G-Max, but the Abtserde. Impeccable balance. Someone was kind enough to bring a '90 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Auslese trocken, which was very, very fine. And don't forget the Pinot Noirs.

Moselchild is still letting people steal some older wines - '79 Erdener Pralat from their eponymous winery (well, one of the Berres offspring made it for them) needs time to fill out with air but what a wine. Creamed petrol, yummy.

Show-off :)

Sounds like good stuff, glad to hear some positive initial views on 2008.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully some of the Keller 08s will be available in the US - I've only tried a couple of his dry wines from 06 but they were absolutely spectacular (the Abtserde was a real WOW wine).

Had a slightly tired 2002 Bernkasteler Doctor BA from Thanisch erben Mller-Burggraef and an even more tired 1998 Ockfener Bockstein Eiswein from SUH. But the very fresh 1999 auction Sptlese from Zilliken is more than making up for it right now (only visiting tomorrow, but more calibrating our palates night before to make sure we have the right context). Plus the memory of some of the new Schaefer wines (watch out for the auction Auslese from Domprobst - really nice and intense), and a throbbing feinherb from A.J. Adam. Also a stunning 2001 auction Sptlese - Leiwener Laurentiuslay from SUH. All potential at the moment but what potential!

Good white asparagus as well.

I was very impressed with van Volxem's wines in 2007, and the 2008 barrel samples. He now has 40 hectares! More thoughts and maybe notes to follow.

Really liked the Vollenweider range in 2008 - the Portz went into the normal Sptlese, and the Reiler was mute but big. The Goldkap is very good too, as is the Krver Steffensberg Auslese (no Goldgrube Auslese this year). He's bought the Shimbock vineyard from its owners, but we didn't taste the still fermenting wine.

Zilliken made a good range although they taste a bit too round for me at this stage. Maybe he de-acidified; I don't know and didn't ask. Ed von Kunow made some really fun wines as well - it's nice how the wines reflect his personality.

I think it's going to be difficult to claim that the 2008s are better than the corresponding 2007s, but they are different in a welcome direction. Don't go searching for the higher prdikat wines and you'll be fine. I also like the vivaciousness of many of the feinherb but am not sure they'll retain the buffering fruit for all that long.

Zilliken still has the normal '93s (both Sptlese and Auslese) for sale, and von Kunow some of the Kanzemer Hrecker from previous vintages. SUH is officially sold out of the 2002 Saarfeilser Auslese, but they have some nice 2007 still available.

But highlights of the trip were Keller, Vollenweider, van Volxem, Weiser-Knstler, Zilliken and Haart, in no particular order. Didn't taste at Joh. Jos. Prm, Fritz Haag or Egon Mller. Also skipped out on the Ruwer valley, Koehler-Ruprecht and Wittmann due to lack of time. Next year, perhaps.

I guess vintage variation plays a part, but is his style still leaning towards the soft and round? I surprised myself by liking the 2007s, but then again that is probably also the the vintage.

By which you mean frank yet delicate? These are the wines that I have wanted to buy the most of in recent years but they haven't been readily available in my local stores and of course there is plenty of other stuff to occupy my money/time.

Is it even necessary? We already know how the wines are going to turn out :)

Nice to hear that '08 is more of a lower pradikat vintage. I loved the Van Volxem wines in 07 (thought the Goldberg dry wine was fantastic in particular), looking forward to his 08s.

von Kunow - Gregarious and good fun. I particularly like the exotic minerality of the Hrecker site. There's a slight bitterness to his wines sometimes, and they can veer towards the rustic end of the spectrum, but they're easy-drinking wines. Sometimes that's all one wants.

There just wasn't sufficient high must-weight and ripe grapes to make Auslesen (and needless to say, the beeren- and trockenbeeren- variants) in 2008. Quite a few growers (Vollenweider, Zilliken, Haart) told me they threw out wines. It'll be an interesting auction this year - my guess is a lot of Spt GK, some older wines (particularly from 2006/7), but overall still a smaller auction.

Yes, I can see how those views converge :)

Always particular with adjectives, but yes I enjoy the brisk fun 'rustic'-ness of the wines.
