King Fung II rises

Events earlier this week put tonight's dinner at King Fung Garden II in jeopardy:

Unfortunately, the video of the actual crash has vanished from the internets. Luckily, Doris and Irvin were able to rebuild enough to host us:

Spicy soft shell crab, crispy whole chicken, Peking Duck, lamb and spicy shrimp / squid were among the delicacies served with a bunch of great wines. Sadly, a 1999 Nigl Riesling Piri Privat and two others were corked/flawed.

Some mighty fine wines including two very nice champagnes to start, a Huet Le Mont 2002 demi sec, a very nice JJ Prum, a 1996 Elio Altare Barolo, an Allemand Cornas that was spectacular, and others I am forgetting.

Little Joe will follow on with actual notes.

Good eyes. According to mlawton, it was a Karthauserhof 2005 Spatlese. You'll have to wait for Joe to find out what we thought about it.

How the hell did a cabernet make it past Security?

Albert was there. We use those as bait so he will be able to find the restaurant.

That's cool. Jeebi are a lot like fishtanks: you always need a bottom feeder. Either that, or a vinegar crock.

I make no claim at being good at this game, but I know I spy a bottle of Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil, some cuvee or other. Also a Weinbach, and (maybe) a Billiot Champagne. Partial credit? Any word on those wines?

The Breton was not opened. Both Champagnes were quite qood and very different. Both Weinbachs were also very different and quite good. As usual for us, the median bottle of white wine was far higher in quality/interest than the median bottle of red wine.

Agreed. One was Pierre Moncuit Champagne Cuve Pierre Moncuit-Delos Blanc de Blancs Brut Grand Cru N.V. and the other was Billiot Champagne Millsim 1996 Brut (IIRC). Two strikingly different and equally pleasurable (to me at least) wines.

#9 served blind a little under a year ago (so the flab and fat was the problem?): a curious mix of slightly over-ripe fruit and almost Saar-like steel, but it is obviously German Riesling, probably '06. Intensely honeyed, tropical fruit; the sugar is rather overwhelming and the acid underwhelming just now. There is much to admire in this, but I do need to try it in a decade or so to see more clearly what is underneath all that fat. (I guessed this was a Ratzenberger, oops.)

Thanks. Not that surprised though - I had the 06 Fritz Haag BJS Spatlese a few months ago and found it incredibly boring. Massively creamy botrytis bomb - not a bad wine, but just not interesting or complex and really disappointing given Haag's reputation.

Cheers,

Probably not the time to be drinking these. Not that I have tasted them frequently or anything. But they were great on release and one would expect them to be great in the future.

needs time. Lots of it, and they show very badly relative to the others when shut down. Don't know why that is.
