RTN: A Small Burgish Gathering (Feb 24, 2003)

Wilfred van Gorp hosted a small gathering of NYC burg lovers in his beautiful Chelsea apartment. The event was a mixed "do": three couples were invited (a fourth showed up much later), with each pair having one wine-geek and one normal person.

As we nibbled on crackers and cheeses:

Dom. de la Vougeraie 99 Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot -- elegant, minerally, very fine, we fought over the last of this one

Leroy 97 Nuits-St-George "Les Lavieres" -- earthy but angular

Mongeard-Mugneret 90 Echezeaux VV -- barnyard nose, lots of really roasted ripe cherries

Ponzi 79 Pinot Noir -- yes, 1979; light color, still a little life (tannin, fruit, acid) left in it; I'd have picked it as a weak 1er cru from a mid-'80s vintage; gadzooks I hope they still make 'em this good

Roar 01 Pinot Noir "Gary's Vineyard" -- I'm told this is a hard-to-find bottle; this is a Keystone Kop compared to the other wines on this table: clumsy, obvious, unsubtle

Drouhin 00 Chambolle-Musigny "Les Amoureuses" -- unbelievably closed

Tollot-Beaut 01 Corton-Bressandes -- also very closed; even hours later it was not showing much

J.F. Mugnier 97 Musigny -- built on a small frame, but velvety and rich within it

Christoffel 00 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese**** -- yes, 4 stars and yes, it is an auction bottling; and yes, it was gorgeous with a perfect balance of richness and snap

Swanson Vineyards (year?) "Angelica" -- nothing else going on in this wine except that it's really, really, really sweet

It was a very happy bunch of us that sauntered out and made our way to a very late dinner.

Thank you, Wilfred.
