Starter white?

I'm bringing a starter white to an off-line tomorrow. I want to bring something off the beaten track and have narrowed it down to:

'01 Radikon Ribolla
'02 Huet Demi LHL
'06 Giacosa Arneis
'98 Hirtzberger GV Rotes Tor

Which would you pick? The theme is Grenache but there is no restriction on the whites.

Arneis is a nice starter.
And while the Hirtzberger needs to be drunk, I think I'd rather have it with food.
Best, Jim

I'm not quite sure what an off-line is, but I'd start with the Arneis and bring the Hirtzbereger as back-up. Both need to be drunk, as do I.

YIKES!!!

No restrictions. Phwew, really dodged a bullet.

The Hirtzberger is the one that most needs drinking.

Actually, now that I think about it. All three but the Huet are in need of drinking.

I don't buy the Orange wine and aging thing.

definately...

And I wouldn't want to start out with a demi-sec Huet...

I 2nd or 3rd the Hirtzberger or the arneis, especially the arneis in summer.

Did you not catch my experiment at Tales of the Cocktail? The one that conclusively proved through diode attachments that orange can age?

The Radikon '01 Ribolla is waay young. And needs time. And will age.

The Giacosa Arneis is particularly floral in the 2006 rendition, which I liked about it. It's too expensive for what it is, but whatever.

You have no evidence for that. You have an educated guess, but so do I.

I think of Arneis as a wine to be consumed in its exuberant youth. I was thinking that the 2006 might be on the back slope of that.

Fairly high tannins are involved for a white.

But in general, yes.

I had the Arneis recently and thought it was much better than last summer when it was either shutdown or still had travel shock.

I'll meet you one decade from today on top of the Empire State Building. I'll wear an orange rose in my lapel so that you will know me. Then we can discuss who was right.

I'll wear a monkey-suit.

I'm going with the Arneis and the GV; I'll save the orange wine to experiment with (I have a few bottles). It is shaping up for a fun night, although as usual there is going to be way too much wine. I will end up spitting or dumping a lot of good wine.

I've sampled the '06 Arneis 4 or 5 times (including last month) and it is holding up nicely so far.

aww, and we can make a movie of that meeting! 'When Nathan met Levi' or 'Sleepless in Collio' or something like that.

(put me in the orange wines don't age camp; not that they won't keep: just that they've had all the oxygen damn well beated out of them that I doubt they will "improve")

It's all a myth.

J Lo also appears to be aging... er... well, though she might bristle at being labeled white. She is, after all, just Jenny from the block.

So how did the Hirtzberger show?

(Also I noticed from Mel's pics that there was an 08 Jemrose Viognier, which was really great to see given that Jim lost a fair bit of that crop early to frost... hope that wine showed well)
