WD1YATN:2007 Pierre Gonon Vin de Pays de l'Ardche Les Iles Feray

JasonA

Jason Adams
Opens big and rich on the nose with some tar and creosote. Starts out disjointed and awkward but improves dramatically over the course of an hour. Deep dark but with clarity, dark ripe blue fruits without any pluminess. Rich, powerful, juicy, animal and bloody meat. Balanced by an acid backbone and no sign of oak. 100% Syrah from the Ardeche and expressed truthfully. Gonon's signature comes through with clarity, balance and attention to detail. A lovely wine from a fantastic winemaker.

I loved this wine and wish I had more. Air is this one's friend at this point.

It was really singing in the last glass (open ~3 hours.)

Cheers,

Kevin

Is Les Iles Feray a vineyard?
I can't say for certain that it is not, but I have found the following:
1. The Gonon wine is a mix of young St-Joseph vines and older VDP de l'Ardeche vines.
2. Les Iles Feray is a neighborhood in Tournon.
3. Nice bunch of Spring and Fall photos of Gonon's harvest.

That is super cool.

Gonon is great. I haven't had a lot but loved every bottle. What did that cost?

It was originally about $17 at CSW. They had recently been discounting it at $15. I was back today and there appeared to be none available. (insert emoticon)

WowI found this wine completely charmless, last spring.
A good thing, too. They're two brothers, and if you'd wanted to marry them, you'd have been a bigamist, or maybe a trigamist. (But you might have had a lot of fun!)
