Corkage quote...unheard of level??

The gist of the following thread: Man getting ready for a special meal at a near-London restaurant and the management wants to charge him an exorbitant corkage fee.

It makes me wonder if there is more to the story than is being divulged!!

What I found most objectionable in the story (after all, a 1000 pound corkage fee is just the same as refusing to allow BYO) is that they apparently waited over 2 and a half weeks after the reservation was made and until 2 days before the dinner (and presumably too late to make other plans) before telling him that that's what the charge would be.

I do hope this is not a real story...if so, another restaurant choice (perhaps fly the whole party to Paris!!) is in order...what a "cheeky" answer
