Just a quick note after an evening with Zul; I lured him out of his usual haunts to a Milanese restaurant I knew with a Disorderly wine list. But he skipped over the page of orange wines for a Prima Rosa, a rose made from Primitivo in Puglia by the producer Mille Una (http://www.milleuna.it/prodotti.html) that came in at 15.5%. I only learned this after tasting some so perhaps my perceptions were different than if I had tried the wine knowing this in advance. Fairly dark color for a rose, looking more like a lightish pinot noir, a nose of sour cherry (amareno) and quite delicious cherry flavors and not a hint of heat. I am very sensitive to alcohol in wine (I mostly do not drink spirits because I find them unpleasantly hot) and (once I knew) I waited for the telltale vodka taste/heat in the back of the throat and it never happened. We started with the wine at room temperature and then tried it cooled down but it was better at close to (European) room temperature. An excellent accompaniment to the tartare with raw egg (hey I am taking international aircraft with good odds that someone on the plane or in the airport has swine flu so why not take a few more risks).
And Zul is doing well; his countercylical lifestyle seems to have paid off in 2009.
