2008 Van Volxem Wawerner Goldberg Riesling
Gorgeous aromatics combining pear and appleskin with minerals and herbal elements, starts to develop with some air and pick up honeyed and smoky notes. It's quite rich in the mouth with a really lovely velvety texture, bright fruit over savoury beeswax, earthy and mineral flavours, kept in very good balance with good acidity and finishes long with a combination of slightly sweet and savoury flavours. Fantastic wine.
2008 Van Volxem Riesling Alte Reben
Opened this a few days after trying the Goldberg. This is brighter in its flavour profile with citrus fruits, pear, talc and floral elements over a steely backbone. There's a faint touch of sweetness on the back end (I'd guess in terms of residual sugar this is probably halbtrocken) with plenty of richness, bright acids and serious length. Amazing value, glad to have more of both wines.
