Pesticides: Michel Barnier confirmed the reduction of 50% within 10 years
Michel Barnier, Minister of Agriculture, presented by the Council of Ministers on action plan for achieving a decrease of 50% of the tonnage of pesticides used in France in 10 years, a goal set at the Grenelle of Environment .
The plan identifies four priorities:
- Disseminating good practices saving agricultural pesticides through a network of pilot farms in 3000,
- Ensure the competence of all stakeholders (users, distributors, consultants)
- Boost agricultural research and innovation in developing new production systems,
- Create a network of epidemiological surveillance to detect and identify the pest risk across the territory, agricultural areas and non-agricultural, accessible to all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the Minister has confirmed the withdrawal from the market products containing the 53 active substances of greatest concern, including 30 by the end of 2008 (including Diuron, a herbicide widely used in viticulture as effective and cheap).
During the same council of ministers, Michel Barnier also unveiled a year after the launch of the plan "Organic Agriculture: Horizon 2012", concrete measures will be implemented to triple areas devoted to organic farming and reach 6 % In 2012:
- The redirection of resources for research and development to break down and take greater account of organic farming in the various programs,
- Consolidation of channels with the creation of a fund with 15 million over 5 years with the Agency bio,
- The mobilization of the intervention of food industries to the tune of 2 million for 4 projects in 2008 and the introduction of 20% of organic products in catering to the state by 2012.
Michel Barnier also announced the removal of aid to the conversion of conventional farming to organic farming.
