2001 Baumard Savennieres Papillon

Youthful straw color, no ambering. Tangy nose of spices, almost sandalwood, hint of citrus. Tangy and dry on the palate, mineral and acid off-set by a kind of woody (not oaky) almost smokey kind of presence, rather than flavor. Although bone dry, a weird sense of off-dry about it. Overall a pleasant and impressive drink, paired very well with turbot and basmati rice.

The '96 of this went through a long madeira-like dry phase and reemerged as one of the most unusual, but very fine whites of my (limited) experience. This one is drying up, but not as dramatically. Interesting appelation.
