Willowcroft Cabernet Franc, Virginia, 2001

A colleague and friend of mine gave me some wine from her father's vineyard in Virginia a couple of years ago. From a visit to the winery I remembered especially the white Cabernet Sauvignon (Blanc de Noir) and the funky Traminette Gewuerztraminer hybrid.

Last week I stumbled upon the last bottle from that gift in the back of my wine storage unit, a 2001 Cabernet Franc. I opened it for dinner with some lamb chops and was quite stunned how well this had aged. It was still rather lively and vibrant, with nice fruit and quite a bit of acid. A great food wine and a real pleasure to drink - the bottle was empty in no time. The current release is the 2006 and goes for 17.99 at the winery. I will definitely get some. This was much more fun while at the same time much cheaper than almost anything I tasted in Santa Barbara County a few weeks ago. Chapeau!

Georg I was given a bottle of Horton Cabernet Franc 1999 a few years ago. I was not impressed; it reminded me of a zinfindel. Glad your bottle was better.
