Once upon a drunken culture

So, I guess 60 years ago in France, the solution to drinking at dinner was "Not to get back in your car without having imbibed a glass of Cointreau." 40% abv. Bravo, la France. Should help with those scary, narrow country roads...

I try to follow the same advice here in New York, substituting 'Cointreau' for 'another bottle of wine'... I like both my wine and my advice old-school...

A friend of the family who was in France in the late '60s reports that the anti-booze campaign of the era was "not more than 2 litres per day."

He also reported that the French leftists in the post-Sputnik era used to walk past the American embassy going "beep...beep...beep."

Pretty funny till they sock you into the gulag.

That's funny Sharon, thanks.

I see that the ad is from L'Illustration. Plenty of good wine-related ads ran in that rag.

Oh that's too funny, though I do recall my uncle sometimes following that advice... Luckily in New York I can drink and let someone else drive (aka cabbie).

When we were jeebusing with friends in Bergen, Norway's very strict laws meant that no one got behind the wheel afterwards. But above a pair of wheels...yeah, that happened. I think it was all downhill, though, which helps. Maybe.
