Opening it up, I was a little worried by the cork. Rather than using my standard old basic Irish Screwpull, I used a waiter's corkscrew with too short of a screw to grab the cork. It broke in half and seemed a bit dry. I managed to get out the rest intact.
Very interesting wine. It skated the edge of being dried out, but I think fell just on this side on not being so. Quite delicious cool toned Grenache, tree bark, forest floor, pine, etc. Classic and recognizably Rasteau, too - fairly standup, somewhat four square. As I sit hear reading my old JLL I see that the Rasteau has a decent amount of Mourvedre, which makes sense.
1986 was considered a long haul vintage and this one certainly fell in the category. Another delightful cool toned Southern Rhone!
This was even way back then a KL importation.
