Ghemme 1990, Cantalupo
My last bottle of this and it was the best one. Deep red colour. Looks surprisingly young. No bricking. Very pretty nose. Cherries, bark, a core of primary fruit. Evolved notes around. Hints of tar, lots of floral high-notes and anise. Complex and intense. Fullbodied and concentrated Ghemme in the mouth. Tight, dry and acidic mouthfeel. Lots of fruit. A little evolved. Yet a core that is highly primary. Cherries. Complex notes of tar and anise. Cool style. Fine acids and a very dry and tannic end. Good length. A wine in need of food. This is a great wine and one of the best wines I have had from Cantalupo.
Ghemme Collis Carellae 1990, Cantalupo
Deep red colour. The nose shows cherries, tar, bark. Red berried core and a touch of florality. Complex, but still highly primary and just a little development. Fullbodied, tight and structured Ghemme in the mouth. Highly cool style with fine and interesting fruit. Cherries, bark, tar. Fine acidity. Hard and very dry finish. Loads of tannins. Shows surprisingly young. Give it another 5 years. Great wine, but a tad below the fantastic normal Ghemme in this vintage. It seems to lacks a little of the depth and a little of the coolness. But who knows where it is in 5 years time.
Gattinara Osso San Grato 2001, Antoniolo
Red colour. Pretty nose. Anise, touch bark and fine high-notes. Slight florality and minerality. Medium bodied Gattinara in the mouth. Fine anise, bark and high-notes. Medium concentration. Remarkably ready for drinking and not the deepest Gattinara. Fine acids and the typical dry tannic end. Very good and drinkable now. Definitely a lighter vintage of Osso San Grato and a wine to drink earlier than normal.
Spanna Campi raudii 1972, Antonio Vallana
An aged "Gattinara" and one of the last vintages made of this wine. Vallana was in a shaky period so I did not know what to expect. But the bottle was in perfect shape and the price low, so I gave it a shot. And what a great wine it turned out to be. Red-brown colour. Slightly cloudy. Fantastic nose. Incredible high-notes of roses and some anise. Hints of nuts and tar. Medium bodied spanna in the mouth. Mature fruit and perhaps not the most concentrated Vallana-wine. But the taste-curve is intense and long with an aged mellow sweetness. Great notes of dried flowers, nuts and tar. Complex and aged. Fine acidity and a soft finish for this grape. Tremendous wine that lives up to the hype of this winemaker. It is lighter than all Vallanas wines I have had from the 50's and 60's, but will especially be remembered for it's amazing nose.
