2004 Domaine Franois Cotat (Paul & Franois) Sancerre Les Culs de Beaujeu , $29, alc 12.5%...this is richer than expected with concentrated lemon and mineral notes...it softens as time passes and fades away gently...acidity is moderate..a little "out of focus" or at least less laser sharp than other Sancerre wines I have had recently....

The wine is always "unlike other Sancerre wines you have had recently." In every vintage. They don't make it like other Sancerres.

"They don't make it like other Sancerres"... enlighten me

It's what they consider to be a throwback style. They prune tight, harvest late by hand, use natural yeast and extremely old small wood cooperage. Some of the wines have rs. It's fair to say that they are not typical of current practice, and sometimes the neighbors deny them the AOC.

They are the longest-lived wines in the AOC, as recent notes here on a couple of '89s attest. Search around and get a feel.

Thanks....glad I have 2 more in the cellar...sounds like they will "rest" for a while...

Yes. 2004 isn't 1989, I wouldn't keep them for 20 years, but there is no rush at all.

Also, in most vintages they are not shy with the SO2, which doubtless contributes to longevity.

Interesting. The first one of these I had, I loved it. The second time, recently (notes here somewhere), I thought it was going downhill faster than a soapbox derby car. The bright acidity turned into a sharper, #3 pencil sharp, and the flavors overwhelmingly lemony, to the exclusion of anything else.

If you are buying in the mid-atlantic be warned: no guarantee of temperature control on the part of the importer (freight and warehouse).
