08 Thevenet Morgon VV

A completely disorienting experience after the superb 09 VV with Jean Paul. Brett, yes. Ugg. Over the course of the evening, it slowly took over the wine like the infection that it is and squeezed it to death. No brett nuance or redemption here, just a slow march towards anonymity.

I feel like we should stage an intervention and push for more sulfur for the US. I continue to believe he is the best of the Morgon producers but just shows here very inconsistently. He said only uses a very small amount of sulfur at bottling - it just may not be enough for the trip.

The 93 keeps rattling around my head - the best Beaujolais I've had, period.

Funny...I had the 08 Thevenet Morgon VV and the 08 Coudert Fleurie at dinner last night.

I also noticed a lot of Brett on the Thevenet, but it didn't bother me for about an hour...and the first hour I really liked the structure of the wine. The wine also showed a bit of astringency and tannin as it opened up and eventually closed down entirely. I also noticed a bit of herbalness on the palate. Tonight, after 24 hours at room temp, the tannin and astringency went away...the brett also went away...and what is left now is fruit...a candied fruit that I'm not too crazy about...slightly metallic fruit, but fruit.

The 08 Coudert Fleurie was so much more fruit forward, yet seemed more delicate. Today, it seemed much more like a cool climate wine and the fruit what more in line with what I expect and like...

Didn't you meet with him on your trip? What did he say about the sulfur issue?

Do you think his terroir is better than the other Morgon folks?
