2007 Pinon Cuvee Tradition

Yule Kim

Yule Kim
I had 2007 Pinon Vouvray Cuvee Tradition last night. Wound very tight and not very giving. This is supposed to be a Demi-Sec, but it tasted very austere and dry, which is normally a good thing for the me, but the finish was a little too tight, the structure a little too unforgiving. The wine was all minerals and could have used a little more fruit. I think I waited on this wine too long...or should have waited several years before opening.

Night and day from the 2006 Pinon, which was a little too round and honeyed. Something in the middle would have been perfect.

You're right. 2007 was sec tendre. But when I did a Google search, the 2008 was called a demi-sec, which was why I think I had it in my head this was a demi-sec as well.

Yes, but who called it demi-sec? Someone who knew what they were talking about?

I think he usually goes for sec tendre with this bottling and I can't see why 2008 would have made it richer than usual.

But someone around here probably has more accurate facts.

Monsieur Pinon never puts demi-sec on the label for this particular bottling, but it is a very rare vintage when this is not finished off in the classic demi-sec style. The 2008 has turned out really lovely, as it offers up a complex nose of bee pollen, sweet grapefruit, lanolin, chalky soil tones and dried flowers in the upper register. On the palate the wine is fullish, deep and very complex, with gentle sweetness on the attack, lovely mid-palate depth, crisp acidity and a nice closing note of citrus peel on the long finish. Classy juice. 2009-2020+.

And there were some other random websites labeling the 2008 a demi-sec.

The wine is sometimes near moelleux territory. The search function may turn up a bit on the subject.

Regardless of the label, it's a fantastic wine that I should have bought more of. I didn't find anything close to austere/ungiving from the bottles I've had earlier this summer. Sorry to hear your bottle didn't offer the same enjoyment.

Yeah, me too. The 2006 was a really nice wine. I'm hoping it will be better tonight. I also might have had it a little too cold, so I might let it warm in the glass a bit.
