2000 Hirtzberger Honivogl Grner Veltliner Smaragd
I was worried about this one, after having a lackluster soft and meandering 2000 Hirtzberger Singerriedel the other night. And, this lived up to all my low expectations. It wasn't really heavy or broad but it was a plump and squishy dollop of fruit that just sat there without enough precision or detail to get me excited. Not a bad wine, but nothing to really keep drinking.

This on the other hand was worth drinking. Firm and golden yet with delightful clarity of presence. I have had the 01 version twice and that strikes me as a more intense and complex wine. But, this was no slouch and it showed layers of silky fruit and presented enough composure and depth for me to want to keep drinking. Nice.

But then 2000 is a very wishy-washy vintage in Wachau which I have largely avoided. A pity about Hirtzberger is that he wastes so much wineyard space on irrelevant grapes, Pinot varieties, Chardonnay etc, while his Gruners and Rieslings are far too hard to come by.

Yes, that was the report and although some people have good things to say about certain 00 wines, these bottles supported that view for me.

Yes, there doesn't seem to be much point in growing Chardonnay in the Wachau.

or anywhere, or so i hear...
Leave just a little bit in the Clos des Perrires in Meursault. For experimental reasons.

(Had the most glorious Grivault 96 Perrires Clos des Perrires - My only non-oxidized one but then woooooow).

Sure, but you of all people wouldn't pull up a great Riesling vineyard to plant Chardonnay, right Jean?

Of course, hence my request for -some- clemency in Burgundy (before someone starts to take this thread seriously).
