'Cheap' Riesling

Merkelbach Riesling Urziger Wurzgarten Kabinett #11 #20 2008 - The wine has more viscosity than I was expecting, but it really works. The acid balance is beautiful and some petrol makes an appearance. At @ $16 a bottle, buy it.

Weingut Brundlmayer Sekt Brut 2005 - Sparkling Austrian Riesling. Precise and delineated yet crazy. Subtle yet wild. I'm not really sure how to talk about this wine, except to say that it s outrageously delicious! At $40, better than 99% of the Champagnes on the market.

Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Gobelsberger 2009 - For less than $20, the best Austrian Riesling made. Dry. 'Nuff said.

Spreitzer Riesling Trocken 2008 - Trocken is German for dry, and this is that. Balanced, easy-drinking stuff. Crisp, light and delicious. It is really nothing complicated, but often that is what is called for... At $19 for a liter, yes a liter, it's perfect.

Spreitzer Riesling Halbtrocken 2009 - Halbtrocken indicates half dry, so you get a bit more sugar here. But the acid balances it out very well. A bit richer, obviously. My only note while drinking the wine was 'coooool'... Even cheaper than the Trocken, for $16 for the liter, if you want to try a super quality slightly sweet German Riesling, this is the way to go.

Scott, I think you know that Brundlmayer isn't German and Langenlois isn't in Germany. And did you mean to say the Gobelsberger is the best Austrian Riesling at $17 or less? For sure you can't, even with the limits of hyperbole (journalistic or not), put it on the actual top?

thanks, sloppy rushing...

I've had Brundlmayer's sparkling wine (and the rose version) more times than I can count, and never been particularly impressed. I'll gladly pay the upcharge for some grower Champagne, or save some bucks and get Huet.

I liked Willi's 1995 a lot, but I don't think I've had a more recent vintage.

On pricing, we'd have to get into details.

Check out their sparkler as well. I've liked it more than Brundlmayer's (with limited samplings of both), fwiw.

The rose that was released last year is very fine with a year of bottle age. A bit pricey, but i think it holds its own in its price range.
