Unheralded Saar and 2005 Drinking?

I recently purchased a bottle of the 2005 Moritz Gogrewe Wiltinger Klosterberg Riesling Sptlese. Although I had not heard of the producer before, it is supposedly a small weingut, ambitious, hardworking, organic, undervalued, etc, etc, and I was excited about potentially finding a new source for scratching my Saar itch.

However, this bottle is not inspiring me. The wine is fine. Sweet, firm, and clear. Competent. But dull. And lacking energy even for an 2005. And this is the Saar!

Of course I haven't had an 05 German riesling in a while so I don't know how they are evolving. Does anyone think this is just a funky stage? Any other experiences with the producer?

Never had a bottle from him but also heard of good things (not sure about the organic bit - especially as he seems to have very small plots).

05 is blousy at the moment - so your tasting could just explain that.

Although someone recently opened a prum w.s. spl for me that surprised me with its crisp edge.

Ok, my source was not the most reliable. But glad to hear that there should be good things from this producer. But even if the flavors of 05s are becoming muted, have the acids really gone into hibernation? Does that even happen?

I know slimming down over time happens and is essential for longterm development of vintages like 05 (and 06) and I obviously haven't had this Gogrewe wine before so I don't know how it showed in the past. But I remember much better acids from the better Saar 05s earlier in the game.

Ah.

I didn't understand your statement as being low in acid. That's weird indeed, certainly from the Saar.

(Maureen - I also had a couple of Prm's SLs recently and they may be slim when compared to other Middle Mosel wines but for Prm rather "rich" - yours not?)

Yes, although now that you have me thinking, it could indeed be a case of the wine showing mute, blowsy, and closed. Because the wine was not heavy and the acid was relatively fresh, it's just that the quality of the acids was not as racy and as zesty as I would like, especially from the Saar.

So, it may indeed be the stage. At least I now know not to keep opening 05s at random.

Ok, I'm going to go with Jean and the whole shut-down blowsy phase thing, because the remainders of the bottle are showing much better tonight. Yes it has the 05 fruit depth but the zesty Saar acids are also in play and the wine is much more interesting for my palate. At the very least, this producer just re-entered my 'explore further' category.
