NWR: Diner

Had dinner at Diner last night in Brooklyn. Have been before for lunch, but never for dinner and I have heard so many great things about their steak. A little background: Diner, along with Marlow and Sons, buys the full cow and butchers it in house...

So, last night there were two options: porter house and rib eye. We had the porter house and asked them to cook it rare. Holy shit it was fabulous. And yes, you have to swear with steak this good. Perfectly cooked and a wonderful piece of meat. But, the crazy thing is that the filet was the best part. I am usually not a fan of filet as it does not have a high enough fat content. But this was simply the best filet I have ever had!! It is damned expensive, $135 for 2 1/2 pounds, but worth every penny.

Wine list is also great, and well priced. Short, but well selected. All names you will be familiar with: G Descombes, Guy Breton, Faillenc St Marie, etc... We had the Guy Breton Morgon VV 2006. Drinking beautifully and the perferct amount of tannin for what was basically a pretty lean steak -- I believe the cows are grass fed...

If you live in NYC, go. If you're visiting NYC, go. No reservations, but at 7pm on a Friday there was no wait.

Good call, Scott. Those both used to be my accounts when I had a Brooklyn territory and Andrew, the owner, is a real stand-up guy. Plenty of Louis/Dressner wines on the list throughout the year thanks to fellow disorderly and Polaner superstar Linus Kessler.

As you mentioned, the food is terrific there and don't let all the trust fund hipsters that infiltrate the place scare you away. A bit of trivia, Diner is the restaurant in the movie Mondovino where Neal Rosenthal is being interviewed.

Diner used to be called "Stacy's" when I used to haunt it. This was in the early-ish 90s. Billyburg's southside was then still a somewhat dangerous crack neighborhood. Stacy's delish home cooking was ahead of its time for the nabe and the place folded after just a couple of years.

And look at it now!
