'93 Fief du Breil

Jo Landron's Domaine de la Louvetrie was ecocert in 1993.

This bottle looks like his corking machine wasn't adjusted very well--the top of the cork is a little mangled and a piece pokes up.

This wine is a beautiful clear golden yellow, without any green.

It still smells a bit of SO2, along with some beguiling aromas of maturity--some pollen, some resin, some mixed furniture and wax, really nice.

In the gob, it's a little ungenerous, a little lean. Claims 12% abv, but I bet it doesn't quite get there.

I think that off-vintage Savennieres of this age from a good producer is a really good bet, but that's perhaps an AOC that runs a little high in ripeness. Muscadet may go the other way for long aging. I have better memories than this of '93 L d'Or, unless I imagined it. '93 Briords, ditto.

But it was fun to try this.

Sorry it didn't work out so well. Maybe another bottle would. I would love to give it a try. This vintage has been very consistent for Clos des Briords, which just seems to get better. Not that this is an off vintage - not anywhere septentrional at any rate.

You know, it looked funny to me too, so I went back and checked the label twice before I posted.

It also has an upside-down airplane on the back.
