Well, finally opened one of those Wintzenhiem Gewurtz's. Still there, but simple and flabby, not my favorite.

Different strokes. Had it a few weeks ago in Chicago with friends and we all thought it showed beautifully. Not flabby at all, for Gewurz, but if you're comparing it to Muscadet, sure it is. Sweet, but balanced with more mineral notes with that aged patina to the fruit. Not getting any better, but was in a lovely spot.

Interesting. Given the condition of the bottle, may be some variability - did yours come from HD?

Definitely off-dry. I just mainly thought it was a little short on complexity, minerality, and acidity. I've had a few early 90s Zind Gewurz's and this was not in the same league at all.

What is the Witzenheim vineyard about?

Now that there's a bit of ZH talk on the table, anyone have any thoughts about a drinking window for the 01 Clos Windsbuhl PG?

Hardly embarrassing; Wintzenheim isn't exactly Chambolle-Musigny.

Joel, I don't think there's any reason to not open it at any point, but it should hold for a fair while yet. I don't think there's anything to be gained from aging it (even as long as you have), but that's my ZH-antipathy given voice; you might want to ask a fan for a second opinion.

Irony of ironies, we drank a 97 CW PG tonight. A touch unfocused, but still delicious. I would think the 01 would be very nice right now.

That's encouraging. We had a bottle maybe 5 yrs back and it was closed down I guess...completely lacking in vibrancy and depth.

Zind makes a Muscadet ?
