Domaine De L'Oubliee (Xavier Courant) Bourgueil? Not good.

Can't seem to find anything on this producer but picked up a couple of bottles of the 2009 "Buffet Froid" the less expensive of the two cuvees offered by this producer at Chambers Street, and a bottle last night was just awful. Anyone here know anything about this producer? This is a Louis/Dressner wine, and I had expected better than what I found.

I haven't tried wines from this producer, but Joe - while not infallible - is usually very solid in this area. 2009 is reputed to be a good year there, too. Could yours have been a flawed bottle or simply too young?

Usually solid is a big part of why I gave it a try, but this bottle is not good. I tried the bottle again today and this is a big gummy fruity mess. I know 2009 CF is ripe, and I have had a few now, some a bit too ripe, some good but young and forward right now. This is none of that. Far be it from me to say a wine won't eventually shake out, but this doesn't look promising. Wouldn't have guessed varietal or region if I hadn't known. No francness. Could have been Spanish bulk wine. Others are drinking it as we speak, so I shouldn't complain too much, but no one seems all that happy about, just killing time until dinner starts and they can drink something else. I have one more, I can revisit in a while and see how my theory holds up, but I don't expect too much.

New producer and his first year.

He took over the vineyards of Christophe Chasle, although in the middle of the growing season and had only a few weeks to organize the 2009 harvest.

Wines just arrived and please give some time. He is converting into organic, they are good vines predominately massale, and I think there is great potential here.

The wine is out in the market and I'm sorry you think it is such a bad effort. That's your call.

Thanks for the info Joe. I do appreciate that these are fresh off the ship, and I have another bottle and would therefore be glad to see it shake out, but at this point two days of tasting showed nothing good, nothing correct either. I can't grade the effort, only the end result. I will bury the other bottle and give it proper time.

I picked up a bottle of this the other day and had it this evening. I had quite the opposite experience. Mine was totally light and bouncy. The initial taste showed a little rough, but with 20 min or so and food it was quite the vin de soif.

But.. I had the exact experience you described with a couple of bottles of the Guion 2007 Bourgueil Prestige. The first bottle was a jammy mess. Totally unstructured. The second bottle was everything it was cracked up to be - total refinement over the regular bottling. In other words, you as I experienced a flawed bottle. i think you should give the Domaine De L'Oubliee another shot.

Jason,

I have another bottle, but will give it a while to settle down. FWIW I really like the Guion wines, terrific value.

Time may help but I think your first bottle was just bad.
