Steinberger Gewürztraminer kabinett Versteigerung 1972, Verwaltung der Staatsweingüter Eltville
AP: 33050 032 73. Ok , I normally don't buy wines from '72 although it is my birthyear, but this weird thing just had to be tried. Never heard that they made a singly gewürztraminer from this vineyard before. The label has the Versteigerung-stamp that means it was sold at one of the auctions. The bottle had top fill and seemed to have been stored perfectly. Upon opening the wine had an amber colour. Spicey and earthy nose. Some faded flowers and faint honey. Fullbodied wine for a kabinett of this age. Lots of life. Lots of sweetness in the fruit. Aged notes of earth and the typical spicey hints of the grape. Not too deep. I don't know why, but I never really seem to catch much depth in any Steinberger, so I can't tell if that is due to the grape. Surprisingly raw and citrusy acidity. It gives the wine a better grip than I am used too from gewürztraminer. And a long and citrusy finish. Very good and still much alive. Label.
