re-LAX ideas?

A spontaneous trip to SoCal coming up. Do Disorderists have any "must-sees" or favorite places to eat/see for over a week there? My mouth is salivating over truck-vendor food...

On Monday nights, Lou has a prix fixe menu with one wine per course that can be a good deal.

I didn't like Palate so much. Fancy.

Never been to Yuca's, but I'll take your word for it.

While I grant you that "food out of a truck" has recently displaced "trucker hat" as the hipster working class signifier-du-jour, it remains true that nearly all of my best taco experiences have been at trucks.

And of course, Lou. Has anyone mentioned Lou yet? If not, it's worth swinging by Lou. In fact, you should just give Lou the secret Wine disorder handshake when you arrive and let him order the wine and food for you. And maybe make a reservation if you're more than one person, as it can get crowded.

-Eden (taco trucks are cool (kewl?) but for the real LA taco experience you need to hit Tito's Tacos in Culver City. Good lunch stop, and eschew chewing the soft tacos and crunch the crispy)
 
Thanks guys and gals! I have a month to look into this, so hopefully I'll get an itinerary planned by then, but it sounds like Lou's is a must. Think 5yr olds would dig the scene there as well?

Does your 5 year old eat tacos? If so, no problemo, Mark. If, like mine, yours will turn up her nose at such fare, you could be in for a long night.

It's the Cochinita Pibil you want here. And don't bother with the newer Hollywood Blvd sit down. It ain't got nuthin on the Hillhurst local.
 
Someone should mention Lou.

In all seriousness, if you are a fan of ethnic food, you owe it to yourself to explore the San Gabriel Valley and it's various Chinese Regional places. From dim sum to pulled noodles and dumplings to hot pots. you'll find everything you need. Do a search for Jonathan Gold's recommendations and he'll steer you right. Arjun's Highland Park rec not withstanding, don't forget the trance inducing Thai in Thaitown (Jitlada, Saap, Ruen Pair), utterly satisfying Lebanese-Armenian places (Carousel & Marouch), thrilling Vietnamese (Viet Noodle Bar & Pho 2000) and Koreatown which boasts a plethora of eateries and chili numbing noodle slingers and bbq joints. LA is about exploring and not playing it safe.

Those are nice too. Hit the liquor store across the parking lot for Negra Modelo (or something craftier, but it's crappy liquor store and a hipster/ghetto-in-an-ironic-sense move) to wash down your food.
